Quit Smoking Plan – Nicotine Patches Weren’t Part Of Mine

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Perhaps the most common of all the methods to quit smoking cigarettes is to find a nicotine supplement such as a patch, gum, or inhaler to help you gradually dose down from the amount of nicotine your body is used to taking in every day.  In theory it sounds like a good idea, it for a certain percentage of people it works,  but being a smoker I am willing to bet you or one of your smoking buddies has failed on a nicotine supplement system.  The reason most people fail on these products after they reached out to find help to quit smoking is because nicotine addiction is only a portion of the over all spectrum of cigarette addiction… If you think about it,  there are tons of habits not related to cigarettes that people have trouble breaking out of. The habit of eating unhealthy is a prefect example of a problem in our society,  people know its bad for them but can’t seem to break that habit which has only mental, not physical, reasoning behind it… When trying to give up smoking, and looking for methods to quit smoking cigarettes, you must find an approach that includes that mental addictive trait that is within all of us.

It wasn’t till I discovered the teachings of Rob Mellor, an expert in Neuro-Linguistic-Programming, that I was able to quit cigarette smoking for good… I know exactly what your thinking right now,  what the heck is Neuro-Linguistic-Programming?  Haha its not exactly something you come across every day so let me put it in to terms you can understand.  Neuro-Linguistic-Programming is different than most methods to quit smoking cigarettes,  its basically a way to reprogram your emotional and mental behaviors.

If you know anything about psychology you would be very familiar with this term because it is used in treating most common psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, stress, phobia treatment,  etc…But assuming your not a psychology major let me explain a little bit more for you.

What Neuro-Linguistic-Programming does is make you understand exactly what is going through your mind when you are craving a cigarette and helps you to reprogram your mind so that you no longer have an automatic response to crave a cigarette during a specific times during the days:

How this helped me give up smoking cigarettes:  I, like most smokers had very specific times when I always needed a smoke.  Some examples would be, After any meal,  during any break I had at work,  while drinking alcohol,  while driving on a long road trip,  when an unexpected stressful situation would arise… I am sure that you know what I mean being a smoker yourself… These are very common triggers that most of us smokers have in common.

What Neuro-Linguistic-Programming does is reverse your mental patterns away from these triggers which will cure the mental part of your addiction and subside the physical part of your addiction for the weeks it takes your body to stop craving nicotine.

If you are serious about giving up smoking,  you need to tackle the mental addiction primarily and the physical addiction will follow with ease… It wasn’t till I was able to overcome the mental part of my addiction that I finally was able to say, “I am a non-smoker” with pride.. Before looking at other methods to quit smoking cigarettes,  I would strongly suggest looking more into this for yourself,  I have to go now but I will have more information for you in my next post…
